Daily Comics Day 1

I've decided to keep myself blogging by venturing on a week of daily comics.
Day 1 is about the inevitable betrayal of  my headphones.
I like how this came out because for once I managed to stick to a colour scheme. I picked out 4 coloured pencils from my big 24 pack, courtesy of Asda's back to school range, and I strictly used those to colour in. Also for the hands I used photo reference which helped a lot. The shape is much more realistic and it gives it more depth than my usual scribbly hands. The composition came from reading Jesse Jacobs comics. (will post an example when I am reunited with my comic which is back at the flat while I am in Wales)

Unfortunately the daily comic idea took hold of me while I'd been on a role with my research. Admittedly this was a distraction from the work I was meant to be doing but at least it was a productive endeavour. Unlike the last couple of days procrastination which just lead to me watching almost 2 seasons of arrested development.

But before I was distracted from my research I managed to get another quote drawn out and sketch loads of Terry Pratchett faces.

This is one from earlier in the week, i never finished the texture on the other half of the hat but you get the idea.

My favourite ones are the one in the bottom left corner because it's a more unusual angle than I normally go for. This happened by accident though, to come up with different versions of him I drew shapes first to serve as a face. My second
+ favourite is the side view just above that one just because it looks like a lovely old man.

This last one you'll have to imagine that the vast majority of it is black. I plan to colour this in with Photoshop when I return to uni, as I have no access to that kind of programme. The one thing that is bothering me about this piece though is that the right hand canine is overlapping one of the front teeth and I didn't want that so that's another thing I shall be fixing in Photoshop.

Even though my blogging fell behind this summer I'm quite proud to say I didn't stop drawing. Unlike last year where I barely picked up a pen then preceded to freak out at the start of the course when I decided I couldn't draw at all. I just wanted to pick out this piece from my sketchpad because it's one of my favourites. I'd just been reading Jesse Jacob's 'Safari Honeymoon' so I decided to do a kind of alien paradise.

And this was a plant page I did, everything except the bottom left were done with reference. The reference really helped my drawing, I didn't stick to the reference religiously and instead played around with the image and added my own touches.

This leaf was my favourite. I cant really explain why. Its just really pleasing to look at. Maybe because I kept it simple. The black and white contrast and the dotted area gives a middle ground, it makes it look balanced.
